Wireless Standards History- 802.11b 802.11a 802.11g

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

In 1997, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) created the first WLAN standard. They called it 802.11 after the name of the group formed to oversee its development. Unfortunately, 802.11 only supported a maximum bandwidth of 2 Mbps - too slow for most applications. For this reason, ordinary 802.11 wireless products are no longer being manufactured. AVG Anti-Malware Detection

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

Based on the excellent Ewido Anti-Malware package, this new AVG offering is a do-it-all solution against viruses, worms, trojans, spyware and adware.

The software is active for 30 days, so you can try out all the features before you buy, and buy is what you will probably do. It’s not wildly expensive and as far as I can see is very effective against keeping spyware threats at bay. Some of the threats I tested it on, like Spy Sheriff and Brave Sentry were not completely removed, but I think more needs to be done to free your machine of those nasty bugs.

Outlook Express BackUp

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

Genie Soft has a great program which solves a problem I’ve had many times in my tech support career: how to back up Outlook Express. Yes, you can search the folders for where the files are hidden and copy them to another computer. But that’s a pain.

This super little program supports backing up the data of all the identities in Microsoft Outlook Express in the same backup file. You can even backup as a self-executable EXE file that can be run on any machine even if the main Genie Backup Manager isn’t running or installed. That’s very cool.

Unlike other backup methods you can copy Multiple Identities, Message Rules, and All accounts and Preferences, as well as Signatures, Stationery, your Address Book. It’s a marvel.

Take the high road to Genie Soft for more…

USB Backup: Synch/Backup to external drive

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

Daily USB Backup is a little program to help you backup your important info or synchronise it with an external drive. It has a file and folder filter so it only backups what you want backed up and it can Monitor the source files automatically and synchronize only the files new or changed. It can also encrypt zipped backup files for added security.

It has USB drive binding support, which means it can be set to recognize only your drive, that way it won’t just start backing up to just any drive that gets connected. The program will monitor the change of system disk letter and recognize the new letter of USB driver. It can recognize the bound disk with several USB disks connected. Which will help the program synchronize files with the right USB driver. If your USB drive isn’t connected, the program will remind you to connect it at the scheduled time. After the alert, it will automatic perform the task in the next 10 minutes.

This is a pretty cool idea for anyone who has say, a laptop that they want to keep synchronized or backed up on an external drive.

In its tenth flight conducted from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota, today (January 10, 2007), ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C7, successfully launched four satellites -- India’s CARTOSAT-2 and Space capsule Recovery Experiment (SRE-1), Indonesia’s LAPAN-TUBSAT and Argentina’s PEHUENSAT-1 into a 635 km high polar orbit. For the first time, a Dual Launch Adopter (DLA) was used in PSLV to accommodate two primary satellites in tandem.

?After the final count down, PSLV-C7 lifted off from the first launch pad at SDSC SHAR, at 9.23 am with the ignition of the core first stage and four of the six strap-on motors. The remaining two strap-on motors were ignited at 25 sec after lift-off. Saddam Execution is it Right??

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

The second clandestine video from Saddam Hussein's execution appeared on the Internet Tuesday, showing the deposed Iraqi leader's corpse, with a gaping neck wound, after his hanging.

The video appeared to have been taken with a camera phone, like the graphic video of the hanging which showed guards taunting Saddam in the final moments of his life.

The footage pans up the shrouded body of the former leader from the feet. It apparently was taken shortly after Saddam was executed and placed on a gurney. He was hanged shortly before dawn on Dec. 30.

TextPad: better than Notepad

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

Everyone who uses Windows has used Notepad at one time or another. Notepad is great for quick and simple editing tasks. If you need to change a few words in a small text file, it’s perfect. Many users get frustrated, though, by the lack of a few more advanced options that would make it a much better editor. If you’ve ever tried to edit a very large file or even a unix file in Notepad, you know what I mean.

A great choice for those frustrated users is TextPad from Helios Software Solutions. TextPad is a smart plain text editor that has many advanced features available for complex editing, but it is also an inexpensive and lightweight solution for those who just need a basic text editor.

Features include the ability to edit huge files, syntax highlighting (great for programmers and web developers), spell checker in 10 different languages, simultaneous editing of multiple files, block column selection, drag and drop editing, and unlimited undo/redo capability. There is even a search and replace feature that allows you to use UNIX style regular expressions.

If you have a need for a plain text editor that’s better than Notepad, check out TextPad.

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

When you have a lot of applications on your system it can really be a tough task accessing them. Guillotine is a lightweight Windows utility that allows you to quickly and naturally access items you commonly (and uncommonly) use like programs, bookmarks, contacts, and web searches.

With Guillotine you find things quickly and easily. The idea is to find things quickly just by typing a few keys, selecting your item, and having a nice time. It’s much more intuitive and easier than hunting down those items as you normally would. But the truth is it will take some time getting used to it as old habits die hard. But once you do, you’ll see how much more intuitive, easier and quicker it is to your normal workflow.

The latest version of Guillotine, 1.2.0.0, has this recent changes:

  • Fixed Opera plugin looking in opera profile folder
  • You can now use relative paths in the FileSystem plugin
  • You can now use the following psuedo-environment variables in the FileSystem plugin, which will expand to their corresponding paths on your system: %START_MENU%, %START_MENU_ALL%, %MY_DOCUMENTS%, %DESKTOP%, %DESKTOP_ALL%, %RECENT%, and %QUICK_LAUNCH%
  • FileSystem extensions now upgraded to full file filters (i.e. can now use wildcards like: *.exe and *work*.doc)

CloneDVD Mobile - watch your movies on the go

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

Here is a useful application to make it easy to watch your favorite DVDs on your mobile equipment. CloneDVD Mobile converts your DVD movies easily into a format that your mobile equipment can play without any difficulty. In case you are wondering what kind of mobile equipment this supports, Sony PSP, Apple iPod Video, iAudio X5, Creative Labs ZEN Vision, etc.

The fact that you also get to convert your DVDs to other file formats, such as DivX, XviD, AVI, MP4, and so on, makes it a really useful tool.

A new version has just been released with these changes:

  • New: added THM-Thumbnail support for Sony PSP
  • Added several new profiles: “BlackBerry Pearl”, “SmartDisk FlashTrax”, “Nokia N93/95″
  • Fix: Zoom option could result in incorrect vertical offset (video image shifted downwards)
  • Fix: still some DVDs resulted in inverted subtitles
  • Several small fixes and improvements
  • Updated languages

And lots more.

OneAlert: Easy reminder calendar

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

OneAlert is a lightweight and powerful reminder system with a simple calendar. It comes from the same people who make “MyLife Organized” which i recently reviewed. This is one of those really simple programs that’s also really powerful and useful. You simple type in a reminder and time to be reminded.

There are different alerts can be set for a reminder (like play a sound, run application or send e-mail). You can also set reoccurring reminders, for example, the same day and time each week.

You can mark an individual day or number of days with specific color. OneAlert can help you to count the number of selected days and show how many days left to your vacation.

Here is the fast three-step scenario of adding new reminder to OneAlert:

  1. While working in any application press OneAlert hotkey (Win+Down by default)
  2. Type in OneAlert parsing console: “Call Katrin in 15 min” and press Ctrl+Enter
  3. Press OneAlert hotkey again to return to application you worked with.

If you want to customize your reminder then just press Enter instead of Ctrl+Enter in step 2 and add additional parameters for your reminder (note, recurrence, different alert actions like send e-mail or run an application).

You can download this program free, with a reminder limit of a 10 a day (not bad really) or unlimited reminders if you have already bought “mylife Organized”.

If you want a good RSS reader, here’s GreatNews

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

There’s a lot of RSS reader programs around. Here’s one that caught my attention. It’s called GreatNews and has an impressive array of features. GreatNews is optimized for the fast and efficient reading of all your favorite web feeds. You can choose from various different view styles, including a newspaper view, that one allows you to read a group of feeds arranged in newspaper-style page layout without the hassle of having to click through individual feed items.

It also supports custom labels, email and blog integration as well as custom keyword alerts (news watches) so you can automatically find articles of interest to you and have them available in a special category. Other features include import/export feeds from/to OPML and XML files, the automatic cleanup of old items, browser integration with popup blocking and more.

GreatNews is a small, fast and very efficient RSS reader - it doesn’t require any installation either, so just unzip and run.

This is one good RSS reader worth grabbing while it’s still freeware and you can do that right here.

Net Transport 2.27 - a powerful download tool

DEXTER'S BLOG'S

Here is a powerful download tool for you. It is very useful and efficient in downloading files from Internet servers. It is called Net Transport.

Net Transport now supports HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, MMS (Microsoft Media Services), and RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol) - five protocols used to transfer data.

Its main features include:

  • Simple but powerful “File Manager” to categorize and manage downloaded files more efficiently
  • Simple multi-user management. You can maintain several databases by logging on Windows with different username
  • You can use the inbuilt “Site Explorer” to list the directory structure of the remote server, and easily select the desired files. FTP is the most powerful item in NetXfer
  • FTP reuse mechanism allows you to use one connection to get different files from the same site. If you like, you can use accessory FTP client tool called “FTP Transport (FtpXfer)”
  • The “Multiple Proxies mode” allows you to assign every working thread a different proxy to break certain site restrictions, like only one connection per IP.

And so much more.

One great thing about it is that it works well with all Windows OS and though it’s a shareware you can check out the trial download for a while before buying the full version, it has a 90 day timeout.
