Hi folks,
After a long time, i have come across a great product. Which is really a wish come true for small office network who are having a vision of making it big. This is more to say likely to be called as a competitor to bigger server giants but i would say or call it a SEVERE THREAT to those money makers. I started getting more information when i got a over view about this product. This is even got a remarkable name called File Engine, the server is affordable to all (by which i mean all, even if you have small office with 2 computers who needs a backup server). This is not like CLOUD where you dont know where your server is but FILE ENGINE would provide you the machine and even there is disaster of data lose they assure you that they will be there to get them back for you. Yes, ofcourse they do it and they have 100's of customers who are already using this product and are happy.... If you want to know about this product, click here FILE ENGINE

This browser was awesome for a week from release and i was flying around they have the plugins running separetly to take care of memory issue..They have clearly mentioned saying help us test the beta, they play it safe as usually... Check the eye and mind catching features they offer...

The brain has an Apple A4 chip inside, just like the iPad. The A4 has few interconnected chips: A Cortex-A8 main processor unit—the main brain—paired with PowerVR SGX 535, handles the high definition graphics of the new iPhone. They are directly connected to each other and two low-power 128MB DDR SDRAM chips. As these components are in the same chip, Apple claims the iPhone 4 can process data more quickly by consuming less battery than ever.

The display
The 3.5-inch multitouch screen has resolution of 960 × 640 pixels. Apple calls it as Retina Display, and 4 times as many pixels as the current iPhone 3GS' display. The screen has 326 ppi resolution, a higher definition than a magazine.

Apple says, that this IPS-based display is same technology as used in the iPad—also(800-to-1) contrast ratio which is 4 times better than the 3GS, with a higher viewing angle.

The apps have automatic advantage of the increased relative resolution, That means they will be a lot sharper for text, 3D graphics and vectorial art. However, developers have to include higher resolution bmp images to get the app look perfect.

Similar to iPhone 3GS and the iPad, the display has an oleophobic layer which makes it easier to clean.

The main camera
New iPhone has bigger sensor for the main camera. It has backlit and bigger lenses too. Instead of having a higher resolution, the sensor maintains the same 5 megapixel count. They are bigger dots,so it has a higher ISO—or sensitivity to light. Which means that you would be able to take better photos and video in low light conditions and the pics will look a lot better.

The camera has a LED flash light, that works both for photographs and video. To focus, both photos and videos, you just need to tap on the screen.

WOW, video conferencing camera at front, there's a video conference camera, with a standard VGA resolution. It can be used with third-party applications, as well as Apple's video conference solution.

Gyroscope
iPhone 4 has a gyroscope built-in. Which means that it can track movement with a very high precision, much higher than accelerometers in previous iPhones. It has 3-axis, so it is capable of detecting pitch, roll, and yaw. Coupled with accelerometer, it has 6-axis motion sensing.

Sony announces death of the floppy disk..Thats sad...

London, April 27 (ANI): Sony is finally killing off the floppy disk.

The Japanese electronics manufacturer, that sold over 12 million of the devices, has made it clear that it will stop making floppy disks from next year, leaving no manufacturer in the market, reports The Telegraph.

"It's amazing to think anyone still uses them, but they are popular still in Japan and India. The last time I used one was when I was at school," said Kat Hannaford, the technology websites Gizmodo' contributing editor.

"Due to dwindling demand, Sony discontinued European production of 3.5 inch floppy disks in September 2009. The last European sale of a floppy disk took place in March 2010," said a spokesman for Sony in Britain.

First developed in 1971, floppies have helped consumers store documents, pictures and data on an easy to use format.

Delhi Police to get mini robot to tackle terror threat

New Delhi, May 6 (IANS) Ahead of the Commonwealth Games, the Delhi Police is set to buy a mini remote-operating vehicle (MROV) that can detect and defuse bombs and explosives, an official said Thursday.

Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said: 'We had a technical evaluation of the MROV (Wednesday). This is the first step in the procurement process.

'Bidding for the price is yet to be done. We are hoping to get it before the Commonwealth Games,' he added.

Manufactured in Canada, the primary function of the MROV is to detect and disarm hidden bombs and explosives. The robot, which weighs 65 kg, can be controlled by a remote within a radius of 500 metres. It can drag weights of up to 113 kg.

The MROV has arms and shoulders and also four night-vision cameras. It is weather-proof but not fire resistant.

It can operate underwater and over rough terrain, moving at a maximum speed of 8 kmph and a minimum of speed of 3 kmph.

Joint Commissioner (north) Karnal Singh said: 'Although the device is designed in Canada, it is suitable in the Indian scenario, particularly in the national capital where it will be able to help in bomb scare situations.'

Wikipedia def of Bug is: “A computer bug is an error, flaw, mistake, failure, or fault in a computer program that prevents it from working correctly or produces an incorrect result. Bugs arise from mistakes and errors, made by people, or a program’s source code or its design.”

Other def can be:
An unwanted and unintended property of a program or piece of hardware, especially one that causes it to malfunction.or
A fault in a program, which causes the program to perform in an unintended or unanticipated manner.

The general definition of bug is: “failure to conform to specifications”.

If you want to detect and resolve the defect in early development stage, defect tracking and software development phases should start simultaneously.

We will discuss more on Writing effective bug report in another article. Let’s concentrate here on bug/defect life cycle..

Life cycle of Bug:

1) Log new defect
When tester logs new bug the mandatory fields are:
Build version, Submit On, Product, Module, Severity, Synopsis and Description to Reproduce

In above list you can add some optional fields if you are using manual Bug template:

These Optional Fields are: Customer name, Browser, Operating system, File Attachments or screenshots.

The following fields remain either filled or blank:
If you have authority to add bug Status, Priority and ‘Assigned to’ fields them you can specify these fields. Otherwise Test manager will set status, Bug priority and assign the bug to respective module owner.

Bug life cycle:

The figure is quite complicated but when you consider the significant steps in bug life cycle you will get quick idea of bug life.

On successful logging the bug is reviewed by Development or Test manager. Test manager can set the bug status as Open, can Assign the bug to developer or bug may be deferred until next release.

When bug gets assigned to developer and can start working on it. Developer can set bug status as won’t fix, Couldn’t reproduce, Need more information or ‘Fixed’.

If the bug status set by developer is either ‘Need more info’ or Fixed then QA responds with specific action. If bug is fixed then QA verifies the bug and can set the bug status as verified closed or Reopen.

Bug status description:
These are various stages of bug life cycle. The status caption may vary depending on the bug tracking system you are using.

1) New: QA files new bug.

2) Deferred: If the bug is not related to current build or can not be fixed in this release or bug is not important to fix immediately then the project manager can set the bug status as deferred.

3) Assigned: ‘Assigned to’ field is set by project lead or manager and assigns bug to developer.

4) Resolved/Fixed: When developer makes necessary code changes and verifies the changes then he/she can make bug status as ‘Fixed’ and the bug is passed to testing team.

5) Could not reproduce: If developer is not able to reproduce the bug by the steps given in bug report by QA then developer can mark the bug as ‘CNR’. QA needs action to check if bug is reproduced and can assign to developer with detailed reproducing steps.

6) Need more information: If developer is not clear about the bug reproduce steps provided by QA to reproduce the bug, then he/she can mark it as “Need more information’. In this case QA needs to add detailed reproducing steps and assign bug back to dev for fix.

7) Reopen: If QA is not satisfy with the fix and if bug is still reproducible even after fix then QA can mark it as ‘Reopen’ so that developer can take appropriate action.

8 ) Closed: If bug is verified by the QA team and if the fix is ok and problem is solved then QA can mark bug as ‘Closed’.

9) Rejected/Invalid: Some times developer or team lead can mark the bug as Rejected or invalid if the system is working according to specifications and bug is just due to some misinterpretation.

Bootcfg

In Windows Vista it is now possible to resize partitions without any data loss in the new Disk Management console.

Resizing Partitions with Windows Vista:

Click on the Start Button and right click on Computer and select Manage.
Expand the Storage section and select Disk Management.
Then just right click on any partition and select either Expand or Shrink to change the size of the partition.

This will allow you to safely resize your partitions without any data loss.

do a full scan and you run a scan with malwarebytes . you can get malwarebytes here, this is a direct download link so you should have no trouble getting it. click on this link ↓ and then select run. http://www.malwarebytes.org/affiliates/2… install it and then update it, then run a full scan and remove everything it finds. some viruses will try to disable it so if malwarebytes will not start up then go into the folder it is in and rename the mbam file to XXX then double click on the file you just renamed to start it up. After you have used malwarebytes then do this online scan.

Once Microsoft Office 2007 has been installed with no product key, proceed with the following steps:

In Windows Explorer, brose to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Proof.en\
Right click on Proof.XML file, select “Open With…” in the right click menu.
In the “Open With” window, select Notepad to be used to open the XML file. In Vista, if you can’t see the Notepad option, simply double click the “Other Programs” to unhide it.
Scroll down to the bottom of the Proof.XML to locate the following lines:
Change the AlwaysInsalled to neverInstalled so that the line looks like following:
Save the Proof.xml file. In Windows Vista, you may need to take ownership and grant full access permission to yourself before able to modify the file.
You can now launch Microsoft Office 2007 application such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and etc without prompting for activation.

Even if these donot work:

1. Go to this location:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Proof.en\

2. Find the file named:

Proof.XML file

3. Then just rename the file to proof1.xml, before doing this make sure you have ownership for the folder completely, right click properties of the folder you can add your name and enter the rights(full rights). This will activate the product....

As usual, as it’s a hack, and before you purchase a valid product key for it, you won’t be able to AND can’t access any updates or Microsoft Office Online.

Unlocking an iPhone

If you’re one of the million people who’ve purchased an iPhone since the end of June, you probably signed up with Apple’s exclusive carrier in the U.S., AT&T, when you activated your phone. That means your iPhone identifies itself to AT&T’s network using an AT&T SIM card, a smart card that’s located in a small tray between your iPhone’s sleep/wake button and its recessed headphone jack.

But what if you’re planning a trip to Europe and rather than paying AT&T to use the networks of its European partners, you want to take advantage of the favorable rates and local phone numbers offered by replacing your AT&T SIM card with a pre-paid European card? Or what if you’d prefer to use T-Mobile as your cellular provider, rather than AT&T?

In the past month several groups have announced that they’ve found a way to “unlock” the iPhone, allowing it to use a SIM card from any provider. (Keep in mind that this is only half the story: the iPhone uses the GSM radio band for its communications, meaning that it’ll only work with providers that use the GSM network. In the U.S., that means T-Mobile and AT&T.)

In August, a group of hackers demonstrated a method for unlocking SIM cards and sold its software to resellers, who in turn began selling it to the public for as much as $100 last week.

But another group has came up with its own hack that, with the help of some free, open-source software, lets you unlock your iPhone in about an hour, free of charge. Below, I’ll show you how it works — and it does work, because I’ve used this technique to unlock my own phone. (One important caveat: Certain AT&T-only features, such as Visual Voicemail, will not work when you’re connected to other cellular networks.)

Before we get started, you’ll want to disable the iTunes helper application that may get in the way of the installation. Make sure iTunes is not running, then open OS X’s Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder of the Applications folder. Search for or scroll down to iTunes Helper, select it, and then click on the Quit Process button in the top left of the screen. You’ll also need your iPhone, your data cable, and a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet.

(If you haven’t already activated your iPhone with AT&T—and aren’t planning to—you need to conduct a fake activation. To do this, you’ll need to follow the excellent instructions at ModMyiPhone and download and install a program called iNdependence.)

Install AppTapp

Apple doesn’t support the installation of third-party applications on the iPhone, but the enterprising developers at NullRiver have created a program called AppTapp that will let you install including chat clients, games, and other pieces of software — including those that are needed to unlock your iPhone. (For more detailed instructions on using AppTapp, see our iPhone Hacking Kit.)

Download and install AppTapp. Once you run the program, the first thing it will do is ask what version of the firmware you’re running. If you’ve just updated your iPhone, you probably have Firmware 1.0.2—select that and click on Continue.

Assuming all goes well, you should get a screen that begins with the words: “Congratulations! You have successfully installed AppTapp Installer onto your iPhone.” You should then find a new application on the iPhone’s home screen called Installer.

The next instructions will require downloading some applications from the Internet to your iPhone—so make sure your iPhone is connected to a WiFi network. Launch the Installer program, and you’ll see a long list of various applications that you can install. Scroll down, then select and install—in order—Community Sources, BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH.

Perform the GSM Unlock

First, download and install Unlock.app, lockdownd, and Cyberduck.

Then go to the iPhone’s General settings and set Auto-Lock to Never. Next, you’ll need to get your iPhone’s IP address on your local network. To do this, go to Settings: Wi-Fi and click on the blue arrow next to the network that you’re connected too. Write down the IP address, as you’ll need it for later.

Now, open Cyberduck and click on the Open Connection button in the top left of the window. In the connection window, type the IP address that you just noted. Make sure that SFTP (SSH Secure File Transfer) is selected, and that you are using Port 22. For the username, type

root

Once connected, navigate from

/private/var/root

to the main directory by choosing the

item. Next, navigate to

/usr/libexec

and drag the file named

lockdownd

(the one you downloaded earlier) into it. It will ask if you want to overwrite the existing file—click on Continue to do so.

Now, in Cyberduck, drag the Unlock file from the Mac’s desktop into the

/Applications

folder at the top of the main window. Once that’s done, turn off your iPhone and remove the SIM card, then turn your iPhone back on and choose the application on your iPhone called Unlock.

Assuming everything went smoothly, there should be a white screen that says “All files found. Ready to go. Press Start.” Once you press start, it will take about 20 minutes for all the files to install.

The progress messages will appear at the top of the screen as it progress—once you see “Completed” then you’re finished. Insert a new SIM card of your choosing into your iPhone. Congratulations, you’ve just unlocked your iPhone!

(If you’re planning on using a T-Mobile SIM card in your iPhone, you’ll want to modify the iPhone’s settings. Follow the instructions at the bottom of the ModMyiPhone tutorial to make sure the settings you enter conform to your T-Mobile data plan.)

The aftermath

One Macworld editor tried this approach — minus the faux-activation step — on his iPhone and was able to insert a T-Mobile SIM card from a co-worker and get the iPhone up and running on the T-Mobile network, as if it were her phone.

(To swap SIM cards in your iPhone, insert an unfolded paper clip into the small hole in the top of the iPhone, next to the headphone jack. This will open the iPhone’s SIM card slot, allowing you to remove your AT&T card and replace it with a different one.)

We don’t know if future Apple iPhone updates will break this functionality. But if you’re about to embark on a European vacation, or if you avoid downloading those iPhone updates, this method will allow you to use the SIM cards of other cellular providers in your iPhone, provided that those providers also use the GSM cellular radio frequencies.

7.Go to the directory where you install the game. It should be in Programs Files in Electronic Arts folder.
There's a BurnoutParadise file which you will have to replace with the crack, the file you downloaded in Step 5).
Remember the crack is 42MB while the one you need to replace is 17MB.

8. Overwrite the Crack and replace burnoutparadise and you are now ready to play the game! Double click the "BurnoutParadise" to start the game.

is the transcript of the conversation between two hackers (I prefer the
word cracker) after successfully hacking the server of Bhabha Atomic
Research Centre (BARC) way back in 1998. The two geeks were chatting
about their spare time activities in an IRC channel.
Joey (who
used the nick name t3k-9), was just a 15 year old 10th grade student.
On that afternoon, he pointed his browser to the old search engine,
Infoseek, and queried “.in atomic”. One of the first sites to come up
was that of BARC.
`Time for offensive action`

He then used the John the Ripper DES Encryption Cracker software to
crack the login password. In fact, this software does the simple
dictionary operation by exploiting a phoney login mechanism. The
cruncher tried many probable mishmash of characters – ranging from a,
b, aa, bb, cc to complex combinations. To this, he added many other
special customised wordlists that he downloaded from the Net, for
better results.

It took him just 45 seconds to break into the BARC server. He looked
at the password: ANSI – a simple and elegant one. Now he had to log
into the system. Joey decided to try his luck by using the same
password, and stuck pay dirt. Without wasting any time, he downloaded
all login names and passwords. He then created a back door through
which which he could login to the system even if the password was
changed.

His next target was the Web server. He went there, read some emails and
opened the attached files. But reams of matter about particle physics
didn’t interest him. So he backed out, of course after erasing his
fingerprints in the site log.

It was only after this incident that India started taking network security issues seriously.
Why is Pakistan Indo-centric?

Ratko (IronLogik) , who was then 18, showed the government that its
classified and semi-classified data was anything but secure. The two
youngsters claimed to have acquired many classified documents
pertaining to the nuclear test conducted in May 1998. Using a hacked
Internet account, Ratko migrated to different US/ European servers and
finally picked an IP, assigned to a Los Alamos-based system. These made
it extremely hard to track the original system. Once he got in, he
erased the administrator logs.

While most experts described this incident as a mere prank, it brutally
exposed the vulnerabilities in Indian network security. The leakage of
information on key strategic issues poses a major security threat, as
hackers can effortlessly read unencrypted emails and attachments and
electronically eavesdrop on mail conversations. The hackers/crackers
can also relocate all the data stored in the system, delete data or
send unauthorised mails to others that may tarnish the image of the
country. And by a logical extension, they can control any strategic
defence device attached to the network and exercise it against the
nation.

The BARC event heralded a new era of warfare, and the first phase
lasted from late 1997 to 2002. Hacker clubs owing allegiance to
either India or Pakistan formed networks. Pakistan’s ISI quickly
started ‘recruiting’ these hackers to attack many Indian sites. Infact,
PHC (Pakistan Hackers Club) and Gforce fought for Pakistan in the war.

Soon, in the third-quarter of 2002, the official website of the Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department
(CID) - was reportedly hacked by pro-Pakistan hackers (the website was
again targeted on November 26, 2008). A self-proclaimed Indian hacker
group HMG, or ‘Guards of Hindustan’ fought on the ‘Indian’ side. These
groups ‘fought for websites’ to demonstrate their skills and establish
themselves. Finally it was reported that the Pakistani Groups settled
issues with NEO, an Indian hacker, and they decided to put an end to
the five-year-long-warfare.
Our military mess

But the war was restarted soon after, and continues to this day. Pakistan's
Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority's (OGRA) website was hacked by HMG’s
‘Indian script kiddie’ (November 17, 2008) A Pakistani Group
called PCA (Pakistan Cyber Army) struck back by hacking into India’s Oil
and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) website . These ‘black
hat’ hackers also vandalised four more Indian sites including the data
site of the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing www.iirs.gov.in
(that handles emails) and the Indian
Railway's data site but thankfully they couldn’t do much damage
to the IIRS site.
They also attacked the Kendriya
Vidyalaya (in Ratlam) site. Pakistan groups even targeted general
websites like  (which now carries a message posted byCyberSpy 5
– the hacking agent) After gaining control over the Kendriya Vidyalaya
website, the HMG posted an ‘advice' asking the site administrator to fix
the flaws. “Ur site was hacked by Pakistani hackers, now ur site is in
our Indian hackers' control,” was their message.

The Pakistani group also infiltrated into the server of the Bank of Baroda and Eastern Railway (www.eastern), and used it to ‘officially’ declare war.

“Cyber war has been declared on Indian cyberspace
by Whackerz- Pakistan (24 Dec-2008),” read the message. This was
followed by another note: “Indians hit hard by Zaid Hamid.”
Izzat and lessons unlearnt
But it is not just hackers from Pakistan that India has to
contend with. The website of The Bank of India, for instance, was
hacked and seeded with a wide array of malware that in turn attacked
visitors to the site. Tracing the source of an attack is a headache.
This may sound strange given reports of the police tracking down the
person who had sent intimidating emails to the President, or the person
who had sent abusive mail to a celebrity.

But the perpetrators are dissimilar. Professional hackers know the
tracing tools used by authorities and hence, use effective
countermeasures and opt for ‘the safest route’. When the Eastern
Railway website was attacked by planting a Trojan virus in the site
(which was done in retaliation to the alleged violation of Pakistani
airspace by Indian aircraft), ER officials tried to trace the route.
After numerous top-brass meetings, they could to only up
Toronto in Canada before reaching a dead end.

There are also many ‘local hackers’ who intrude into high security
zones “for fun” or to expose their vulnerabilities. But this may aid
foreign agents to attack our servers.
Take the war to the enemy

Though many government sites have add-on firewalls and cyber security
certificates (ER has a certificate issue by US-based Thawte
consultation company), the attackers continue to get through. It was
not long before when Greek black hat hackers broke into the high
security zone of the CERN laboratory and vandalised the website of
Large Hadron Collider – LHC.

Apart from the dictionary attack mode, hackers can also use a SQL
(Structured Query Language) injection method where pages with active
content (like contact forms) are used. This is the most preferred
technique of Chinese hackers. For over two years (which lasted till the
first half of 2008), China mounted daily attacks on Indian computer
networks, both government and private. The methods adopted are so
sophisticated and varied that it is difficult to categorize them under
a generic head. Some of the major attacks whose roots were traced
to China targeted the NIC (National Informatics Centre), the National
Security Council, and the Ministry of External Affairs.
Pakistan: Thus far and no further

According to security experts, Chinese hackers are the acknowledged
experts in setting up BOTs - a parasite program embedded in a network,
which hijacks the networks and control the systems in the network-
which in turn are controlled by external agents.

As per official estimates, there are at least operational 50,000 BOTs
in Indian networks. The infiltrator usually also embeds some ‘mines’
which are essentially ‘key loggers’ capable of scanning devices and
processes. So the moment you hit a key on the keyboard, it will be
communicated to the ‘external agent’. They also use mapping (or
scanning networks) as a prerequisite.

Faced with this new threat, India's Research and Analysis Wing, as well
the Intelligence Bureau, took this new form of warfare seriously and
created a body to monitor network activity. In Pakistan, they use a
central routing device (a Cisco router) to monitor the traffic. But
in India, our mechanisms are multifaceted.
Why terrorists can relax in India

Anyone using computers is familiar with the words
malware and spyware. But hardly anyone discusses hackware that poses a
far serious threat to an increasingly networked world. A group of
security experts reviewed the networking tools after crackers broke
into the Bank of India server
(August 30, 2007). In their report (a segment of which is available
here), they exposed the serious threats and the vulnerabilities in the
network security.
This is not just true for India. The entire world's
commercial and financial markets are intricately networked. The 2008
financial meltdown is a prime example of how quickly a domestic
economic crisis can impact the entire world.

Much has been said about the War on terror. But are we prepared to
deal with cyber-terror where faceless entities sitting in another
corner of the world can bring down or seriously compromise a nation's
security?

Those who believe that nations like Pakistan lack the technical
know-how to initiate such acts, should read a recent article in Tehelka
by Harinder Baweja. According to Baweja, who was taken on a conducted
tour of the madrasa at Muridke, Pakistan, the headquarters of the
Jamaat-ud-Dawa and believed to be the headquarters of the Lashkar-e-
Taiba, “The students who enroll in the school pay a fee while those who
study in the madarsa and pass out as masters in Islamic studies can
come for free. Learning English and Arabic from class one is
compulsory, as is a course in computers.”

The Chinese cyber attack on the Pentagon in June 2007 is another prime example.

Even as I was writing this piece, I learnt that the site http://iirs.gov.in/ had been attacked again, with visitors being redirected to a commercial website.

So, while India and Pakistan officially maintain that neither side
wants a war, the cyber war has been officially declared open.

Software and tools
1. ThinkFree Office
is a powerful suite of productivity apps that includes a robust word
processor, spreadsheet and presentation tool. The suite has subtle
touches such as an inline spell-checker, and you can work offline if
the Internet goes down. There's also support for 11 languages and
helpful PDF export capability. Most importantly, you can share
documents with other users and work on files collaboratively. The suite
is free if you can live with 1GB of storage, or upgrade for a nominal
fee to a premium account.
2. Zoho
is a highly useful web portal for being productive on the go. More than
just a word processor and task manager, Zoho has a multitude of small
web apps for taking notes, storing contact information and project
management. There's even a web conferencing tool. APIs are available
for the web services in Zoho's word processor and spreadsheet, too.
There's also a slideshow creator so that you can make calls from
another website – for example, an accounting site could read tables
from a Zoho spreadsheet. The site is one of the first to support VB
macros and the document mark-up language LaTeX.
3. It's time to ditch Microsoft Excel. EditGrid
is powerful enough for basic number crunching without the extensive
pivot table and worksheet functions. Its main strength, unsurprisingly,
comes in how you can format cells, with image includes, JavaScript
calls and a data exchange between spreadsheets and even between the
spreadsheets hosted by other users. There's a plugin that reads Excel
data, templates, mash-up features for integrating data from websites
like Yahoo! Finance and plenty of text formatting options. Registration
is quick and there are three pricing plans: one free account, a premium
account for just a few dollars per month and a multi-user company plan.
Unfortunately, it does not work in Internet Explorer 6.

Web project management has taken a beating these last few years,
especially since tools like www.basecamphq.com stress simplicity over
actual features. Clarizen is
easy to use and runs fast on a 3Mbps connection on a 64-bit 3GHz Vista
PC, but it also has deeper features. For example, you can update your
task list by sending an email to the project inbox. (You can also
request a daily task list by sending an email.)
5. The original idea for SlideShare
came when co-founder Jonathan Boutelle was at a conference and saw how
attendees were easily sharing large videos and photo collections
online, but had to physically pass around USB keys to distribute sales
presentations. He created SlideShare as a way to host and store
PowerPoint files. It has became incredibly popular.
6. It may not have the flare and design of Microsoft Visio, but the online flow-charting program known as Gliffy
certainly has an expansive set of features. There are icons for
networking, office design and organisation charts to help you put some
order around any idea. Line connectors automatically snap into place,
or avoid certain shapes when you move them around the screen – a
powerful programming trick, especially since the site does not use any
plug-ins or require you to download any software.
7. Part online presence for slideshows and part client-side tool that helps you create presentations and post them online, sliderocket.com
has one major benefit: it's lightning fast. In tests with several
different PCs at different connection speeds (including one at a public
hotspot), we found that we could create a detailed sales presentation
with several high-res graphics in no time The site uses Adobe Flex and
the AIR client. 'Presentation analytics' (now there's a buzzword) tells
you who saw your presentation and even how long they looked at each of
your slides.
8. Scribd
is not quite a word processor, although it looks like one at first.
Instead, it's actually a content creation tool that you could use to
publish your own technical papers, schoolwork, or even a novel online.
It's also one of the only document management tools we have found that
is free and publicly available (Scribd also offers a closed service).
Storage and files
9. Our favourite online storage portal, box.net
has the most fascinating social networking features. Other users can
tag and comment on your files (if you give them permission). You can
use APIs to link the storage (a basic account is free, premium services
cost about £4-£10 per month) to popular web services like www.zoho.com and www.picnik.com.
If you do go with the premium account, you get 5 or 15GBs and the
ability to see version history on files. Alas, there does not appear to
be a desktop folder as with Dropbox.
10. It's easier to understand Pando
by what it's not: you can't sync files, store them online or make
back-ups. Instead, it's the best site we' found for sending large fi
les by email. Instead of using attachments, you just send your
recipient a Pando link. Max file size is 1GB, and there's a video
sharing version for consumers and corporate users – all free.
11. Although it's not what we really want (a full Microsoft Word client on the web), Workspace
is as close as Microsoft is willing to get at this point. It's a 'store
and share' site that is worth your time because you can archive
thousands of Word docs for free and make them fully searchable online –
for you or for any user you give permission to access the archive.
12. Instead of just storing your files online or syncing them between computers, MozyHome
is both a web portal to view your archived files and a client-side
back-up app. Its main feature is the ability to monitor important
folders and archive them to the web so that you can restore them at any
time, regardless of whether you are even using the same computer.
MozyHome is the free version that comes with 2GB of online storage,
while Mozy Unlimited costs $5 per month and Mozy Pro is a network
back-up utility with several pricing plans.
13. Most photo sharing sites use some combination of web forms, HTML and JavaScript to help you organise your photos online. Zoto uses JavaScript, along with a client-side photo uploader that

as an attention grabbing alternative OS that runs in a browser. After
all, it could be argued Firefox is a kind of operating system that runs
JavaScript apps. EyeOS makes easy work of common tasks like file
associations and one-click access to your favourite apps. The OS
includes 60 popular apps, including word processing and audio players –
you can get more at www.eyeos-apps.org. Still in its infant state, EyeOS reveals a tantalising glimpse of what Windows could look like if it ran in a browser.
15. The concept of a 'social database' might seem like a contradiction – but Blist
pulls it off. You can enter vast quantities of data – the entire
fantasy football roster for all your friends, for example – and then
share the data between Blist users. Templates are geared for those who
want to weed out duplicate data.
16. The holy
grail of file syncing is the ability to drop files into a folder and
have that same folder show up on every other computer you own and work
exactly like a network drive – except that it's online. Dropbox
(still in beta) solves this issue. Just add a folder to your desktop
and copy files. You can also share complete folders so that anyone with
access to the folder sees and is able to use the shared, synced files.
17. Carbonite
is a unique online back-up utility that sits in your system tray and
watches important folders, such as those containing 'dev' files or Word
documents, automatically archiving them to a secure website as you
work. There is no limit to the storage space available, although the
program will only upload a couple of gigabytes per day. Strangely,
after install, the clientside app reboots Windows Explorer.
Graphics
18. There are no extra frills offered by dafont.com
– the main draw is that the site houses over 7,000 fonts, all freely
available to download for Mac or Windows. Linux users will have to
convert the fonts. You can grab every single font in one eMule or
BitTorrent file; just go to www.dafont.com/faq.php#howmany and look for
the 'zip' file links.
19. Part Flickr replacement and part entry-level photo editor, Photoshop Express
proves that Adobe is on a clear path toward online apps. It's fairly
basic: you can apply a handful of filters for lighting and exposure,
rotate and re-size images, embed photos into a web page and share your
shots with other users – even those on Flickr. The site shows huge
potential: with 2GB of free storage, imagine being able to apply
complex editing tasks to a series of photos where 'the cloud' does all
the processing for you.
20. There's a plethora of general purpose how-to sites on the web, including the fantastic www.wonderhowto.com, but Luxa is
for the technical-minded Photoshop user. You may already know how to
perform a Gaussian blur, but Luxa teaches you how to make neon glow
effects, complex layering, text design within Photoshop and many other
skills.
21. Don't avoid Bluestring
just because it's owned by AOL: the site is an example of how the web
can be a powerful ally in digital media collection. You can upload
music, photos, and videos. The handy status bar lets you do a massive
bulk upload and switch to a different tab, then check back to see how
much data has been uploaded.

22. Ecommerce sites have changed dramatically over the years. Imagekind
is a unique site that lets you preview museum art and photos on various
picture frames and even different canvas materials before making the
purchase. Prints generally cost about £15 each. You can also sell your
own prints.
23. Web users are always in a hurry, which is what makes Flauntr
so attractive. You can click one option to see multiple views of how a
filter will change your photo. Using the 'PicasR' filter, you can pick
a work of art from Picasso and apply that technique to your image. The
site isn't exceptionally fast, but the drag-and-drop interface and
one-click effects are worth exploration.
24. If registering with Simplebucket
could be easier, we'd be surprised. To upload photos (2MB max per
image), you don't even need an account. You just type in your email,
select photos and upload. You can then view those photos associated
with your email account by clicking on a secure link the site sends
you. Simplebucket is free, although you can buy more 'upload credits'
for a few dollars – you get five free per day. If you want a password,
you can always upload a photo and then click 'Settings' to create an
account.
25. 1001freefonts
actually has about 7,000 fonts to pick from, each with a useful
preview. You can also perform a 'custom preview' to see how the font
looks with the text you intend using. There's also a download option to
buy 7,000 fonts all at once, which costs about a tenner.
26. InterfaceLIFT
is a vast collection of icons, images, wallpapers and random clipart,
which can help you add some flair to a web app or an interface. You can
also just download desktop wallpapers — it's an amazingly good
collection and all the artwork is free to use.
27. Similar to Photoshop Express, Picnik
goes much further with an extensive array of photo-editing effects,
histograms, fine pixel alterations and colour correction. You can
upload photos from your PC, a webcam and any website.
Research and e-learning
28. Not all sites have to use a flashy interface. Martindale's
reference desk is essentially a collection of links to really useful
information. There's a huge wealth of reference material on disparate
topics such as banjo lessons, world clocks, time and expense
calculators, eye tests for computer users, a science database, currency
convertors and just about anything you can think of. As the web moves
closer to a 'single use' model where one site performs only a simple
function, Martindale's throws the book at you – virtually.
29. Ever wonder how to embed a picture to a cell in Microsoft Excel? At eHow,
you can find the answer in just a few clicks. They have categories for
electronics, careers, health and many others. The site is almost all
text, so you can find the answers you need quickly.
30. Mashery
is a hosted service for your web API – it allows you to create links
between, say, Yahoo! maps and Flickr photos, or plot the location of
public parks with disc golf data you pull from a volunteer site. It
supports usage tracking, asset management, encryption – everything you
need to link data form one host to another.
31. Amazon uses the term 'artificial artificial intelligence' (sic) to define what the Mechanical Turk
site is all about. It's actually a site where you can sign up to
perform very repetitive tasks, such as typing text transcripts for
videos. You pay just a few cents per completed Human Intelligence Task.
These are generally things that a computer is not very good at. It's a
very illuminating example of where AI is faltering.

32. Agreeing on basic business principals often requires written contracts and lawyers. You can skip that chaos by using Mumboe,
a site that hosts online applications for business agreements. The free
account is quite limited: you can only host up to 10 agreements and
only three users can apply. Pricing for premium accounts runs to about
£12 to £24 per month for unlimited users, secure and searchable
contracts and version control. Registration is a little clunky: you
have to agree to the terms twice and the confirmation email took a
while to send.
33. Not quite a web aggregator, yet more than a simple search engine, PageOnce
lets you add secure sites to one page – you can see your bank balance,
airline ticket info, Netflix rentals and a host of other data.
Registration was pretty easy: no codes to type in, just a confirmation
link sent through email.
Mobile workers
34. The problem with most video chat software is that everyone you chat with needs to have downloaded the client. TokBox works
online for two-way chats and multi-point video conferences with no
software to download, and the registration is Web 2.0-streamlined to
get you talking straightaway.
35. Other online
conversion sites show you a laundry list of other options besides
currency, for example weight, measurement and even language. Xe focuses entirely on currency, which means that it's easier to navigate and conversion options are all on the main screen.

languages and presents an uncluttered, mostly ad-free interface for

notes to participants. It's very useful for web developers and
designers who want to visit a site in production to talk about the look
and feel of it. It's also just a good meet-up site for mobile users who
need to exchange ideas, and best of all, it's free.
38. Mobile users can watch TV any time they want with Joost
- and the service has recently switched to an online viewer instead of
requiring that you download a client. With 28,000 shows online, Joost
has a leg up on other more 'premium' sites such as Hulu, although don't expect a high bit-rate or HD quality for any of the online streams.
